Blog EntryPersonalize Your Welcome MessageApr 10, '07 3:14 PM
by Meg for everyone
Customizing your welcome message can help to give your multiply site a personal feel. It's easy to do.

Click on "My Site" at the top of any page within Multiply. This will take you to your personal site's home page. Just to the left of your headshot, right above your current welcome message, you'll see a link that says "Customize My Site". Click on that. A yellow bar will slide down from the top of the page and the rest of the page will have boxes around the various sections.

Click on "Edit" in the upper right hand corner of your welcome box. A new box will appear over the page in which you can edit the title of your welcome message, the content, where you can choose to "Show your Tags at the end of your Welcome Message", choose to "Show a link to your Profile the end of your Welcome Message", and/or choose to play music on your home page. (To find out more about posting music here on multiply, you may want to look through these posts.)

You can add pictures, links, and other doo dads using html in the content section. (If you don't know how to use html, you might want to check out this link to a tutorial. You don't have to learn much to be able to make significant improvements to your posts.)

Once you've made all the changes that you want to, click on the "save" button at the bottom of that little box. You can make other customizations to your site now if you'd like, or you can click the "done" button at the very top of the page.

If you accidentally hide a section and can't figure out how to get it back, you may want to check out this post.

and/or choose to play music on your home page.
for even more advanced customization tips check out http://modify.multiply.com and http://multiplydesign.multiply.com

My friend recently asked me if it's possible to make her music play on all of her pages instead of being limited to home page.
I did manage to make it happen with some html digging/copy/pasting into the 'Title' box. It is definitely not user friendly.

Thanks, Meg, this is a very good tutorial.

Thanks especially for the link to the HTML tutorial. I'm trying to figure out how to put a picture - I'll be back if I can't. The other information is terrific.

Thank you, Luiz, I just read them. Don't fall off your chair, but - I understand this! My only problem is the image size, but I think I ought to post my question in 'notes'. Right?
dantcer wrote on Apr 11, '07
Yes, questions should go in Notes section of this group to help everyone. However, modifications to your Multiply page not related to actual Multiply issues are best addressed at multiplynewbie or modify :)
lfom wrote on Apr 11, '07
You can resize an image using the HTML img command, it's explained in the 1st tutorial. You'd better ask questions like this in the New to Multiply group or in the Modify group, IMO. (like Linda said before me =P)

this is a thread about welcome messages. if you have a question about a welcome message, i would love to hear about it here.

however, your question seems to be about something altogether different. i would recommend starting a new thread to address your question.

(and with all the blinky shiney things on your wife's site, i'm guessing you just didn't wait long enough for it to load.)

I am going nuts because I filled out information for a profile, and can't find where to add or hide it!! I know other people have a link to a profile, either in their welcome or under their headshot? why am I so dumb??
dantcer wrote on Apr 23, '07
Bottom right of your welcome area, you should see the words "view profile". Upon clicking on it, you will then see the option to edit your profile.
dantcer wrote on Apr 23, '07
Also, if you can't see it, click on Customize, and then in the upper yellow drop down area, there should be the option to show your profile if you have it hidden.
lfom wrote on Apr 23, '07
You can choose to hide or show your profile when you edit your Welcome Message. For this, click on Customize My Site then on Edit in your Welcome Message.

you'll need to use html to either center them, or organize them (probably with a table).

if you don't know how to do html, click here.

it sounds like something you might need customer service to help you fix. or you could check the source code to see if there's a URL you could try to pull out that would load the customize functions. not sure how that works, though. i thought it was a javascript.

make sure that you have the latest version of your browser loaded.

and if you've added something to your welcome message from another site, you may want to try to remove it and see if that helps.

the width of the welcome box depends on the theme you are using. some themes have constrained proportions and some do not. (or perhaps it's only the default and modified color themes that do not.)

try adding an image that you know the size of and adjust from there.

if you want to change the banner picture that shows up at the top of the theme (not in the welcome box but above it) that also will depend on what theme you are basing your page on. ditto for the links section. it all depends on your base theme.
bitchisback wrote on Jun 27, '07

barefootmeg wrote on Jun 27, '07

it looks like you're using the default theme and have already stretched it out a bit with the slideshow. so banner size would all depend on whether you want to match the new stretched size, or the original unstretched size.

since your question seems to be more how to customize your page rather than how to customize your welcome message, though, you might want to check out some groups that are focused on that specific topic like the modify group or i think the other one is called grouped. they'll not only help you get the right size banner, but they'll have information about which theme might work better, how to add the banner in once you get to that point, etc.

to center a post (in your welcome message or elsewhere) you'll need to use html. i'd recommend checking out this page which explains centering as well as other things and which is really easy to understand.

check out this thread and see if it helps. if not, go to the home page of this group and type "unhide" in the search engine that's in the welcome message. there are 3 pages of threads that have already been posted on this subject.

if you mean that you want to add an image to your welcome message, then all you need is regular html. if you don't know html, i'd recommend googling for a tutorial. there are lots on the web.

if you mean that you want to change the banner image that is above your welcome message, then that's a good question to ask in the modify group or in the grouped group.

i'm guessing that you changed your CSS and covered up your "customize my site" link.

to fix this, i'd recommend clicking on "settings" then choosing the option to customize the look of your site. this will put you into customization mode.

fix whatever CSS you put in that covered up the link.

barefootmeg wrote on Nov 29, '07
i don't see why it won't move, unless it has something to do with the title. it looks like all the other titles have special graphics except that one. could it be that there's supposed to be something special there but it's messing up the box?

it actually looks fine where it is. it's nice to have the pictures at the top. it's a nice looking page. :-)

but if you can't figure it out, and no one else has a suggestion, you might want to have the customer service folks look at it. maybe clear your cache and restart the browser first just to make sure it's not one of those things.

i can see your welcome message just fine. in fact, i can also hear the music blaring out of it (which took me by surprise and which i wish you had warned us about as the last thing i want to hear in the quiet of the morning is someone else's music blaring into my life.)

i'm not sure what your problem is. the box is there. it's showing up to me, and since i'm not a contact that means that your welcome box is showing to everyone, the public. are you trying to show something inside the message box that's now showing up? or are you trying to move the message box so that it's not at the bottom of the page?
dantcer wrote on Mar 31
Go to the bottom of your page and click on "view as another user" and you will see what shows as "public".
dantcer wrote on Mar 31
BTW... Your welcome area is at the VERY bottom of your page also. You must have unhid it after hiding it and didn't see it. When you unhide something it usually lands at the bottom of the page and you need to move it if you wish.

my welcome message seems too big that you have to use a scroll bar to see my user pic D:
how could i make it fit w/o having to use a [left to right] scroll bar
you've got so much stuff on your page, that it's hard to know where to begin. (warning to anyone who may click through to the page, in addition to being uber image and blinky heavy, it also has music.)

i would recommend going to the edit section of your welcome message and copying all of the text/html into a notepad or some other program. then remove it all from your welcome box, save, and see if the page is fixed. if so, then add things back one at a time until one of them message up the look of your page. if removing the stuff from the welcome box doesn't help, then i'm guessing it's one of the images in your guestbook.
