Group's posts with tag: blog
This is a common recurrent question that often appears in the Questions section, so here is a quick FAQ about it. This reflects my personal opinion and knowledge.
Multiply does not allow comments from non-Multiply members as probably you know by now. It's this way to prevent abuse (spamming, trolling, etc) and because Multiply is also a social network service, not only a blog tool. But you can also share your posts with non-Multiply members easily, from simpler to more complicated:
- Share your posts by email: Multiply will keep a list of contacts you've invited and you can send your posts to them by email after you publish a new item. Although they won't be able to reply on your page, they will have full access to your content (using the personal link on the email), even for private posts (think secure) and they will be able to reply to you by email. (By the way, you can do this with old posts using the share link on your already-published posts).
- Cross-posting: you can enable cross-posting with 3 services as of now: LiveJournal, Typepad and Blogger. It means that your posts to Multiply will also be (automatically) posted to these services (and vice-versa). These services may offer "anonymous comments", and then you may have the best of two worlds: private comments on Multiply and public comments on Blogger, for instance. For more info:
- Add a chatbox/shout-out box: there are 3rd party services you can use, like the meebo.com widget. The bad thing about this is that you will have to add it to every post, but the good thing is that it will work with any post, not only blog ones. Before you ask, you can only use Flash or simple HTML widgets. JavaScript/iframe are forbidden due to security reasons, so it means that the popular cbox.ws won't work.

You already know how to add images to your Blog entries (tutorials can be found here or here). It's simple and easy because there is a button for this (among other things) while you compose or edit a blog entry. You can even use it to create the HTML code to place somewhere else that does not have the powerful editing tools: just click on 'Edit HTML' to copy the code. But if you want to do it quickly in a reply or host your own set of smileys to add to your comments in Guestbooks or in your Welcome Message? Basically, you have to use this HTML command: <img src="Image_URL">where Image_URL is the address of the image on the Internet (it cannot be in your computer, it must be hosted online so others can see it). For instance, the blog icon above has this URL: http://images.multiply.com/multiply/icons/clean/24x24/journal.pngyou can then use this command to display it anywhere you want: <img src="http://images.multiply.com/multiply/icons/clean/24x24/journal.png">that will show this: You can even host your images here on Multiply in a private photo album (so no one else can see them) and easily get the code to embed them elsewhere. Here are some nice tutorials related to this subject that can be found in the New to Multiply group where you can find more details: http://multiplynewbie.multiply.com/journal/item/46/Hot-linking_images_inside_Multiplyhttp://multiplynewbie.multiply.com/journal/item/47/Hot-linking_inside_Multiply_-_Part_2http://multiplynewbie.multiply.com/journal/item/17/Pictures_in_the_text In the comments of the first one, there is even a tip about how to add an album artwork to your playlist (Music post) so it will display in the Type column if your Music page is set to Table View. Another tip: when using code from third party sites, be aware that they may include advertising or even malware with the image code. To avoid this, copy the code from their sites, paste it in a text editor and use only the part of the code that has the IMG tag. For example, this is a code from a known image hosting site: <a href=http://www.ZangyGraphics.com/picture.php?c=hi&n=271><img src=http://zangygraphics.com/hi/test2.gif border=0></a><br><a href="http://zangygraphics.com/imgs/logo.php"><img src="http://zangygraphics.com/imgs/zangylogo.jpg" border="0"></a>
But the only part you really need to display the image is the one in bold : <img src=http://zangygraphics.com/hi/test2.gif border=0>
PS: If it seems that you cannot add an image to a friend's Guestbook (or the other way around: if you want to prevent images in your Guestbook), probably you want to take a look at the Guestbook FAQ entry. JavaScript (the have the script tag in the code) and iframe codes aren't allowed in Multiply for security reasons. Any other code that is simple HTML or Flash, like the ones that use the EMBED or OBJECT command, should work fine. Usually the site give you options for the code: look for the one in simple HTML (no script tags) or one that uses Flash. Tip: many widgets that use JavaScript code also have a non-JavaScript code attached for compatibility reasons, like the counter from sitemeter.com. To use it on Multiply simply copy the code between the noscript tags. For example, if they give you this code: <!-- Site Meter --> <script type="text/javascript" src=" >http://s24.sitemeter.com/js/counter.js?site=YourUsername"></script> <noscript> <a href="http://s24.sitemeter.com/stats.asp?site=YourUsername" target="_top"> <img src="http://s24.sitemeter.com/meter.asp?site=YourUsername" alt="Site Meter" border="0"/></a> </noscript><!-- Copyright (c)2006 Site Meter --> Copy this part and use it in your site: <a href="http://s24.sitemeter.com/stats.asp?site=YourUsername" target="_top"> <img src="http://s24.sitemeter.com/meter.asp?site=YourUsername" alt="Site Meter" border="0"/></a>
PS: JavaScript isn't the same as Java. Java widgets should work too, as they usually use the EMBED/OBJECT tag. As a side note, sometimes when you try to copy and paste excerpts from other web pages to yours, usually blog entries, you may get the message that 'JavaScrit/CSS isn't allowed', and you can save your post. It happens because some of the page code was also copied and also pasted with the text. To avoid this, first paste the excerpt in a plain-text editor, like Notepad on Win or Smultron on a Mac, and then copy it again and paste on your page. You will get only the text and should be able to save your entry. Update1: EMBED codes that have allowscriptaccess won't work anymore (they will be disabled when added to Multiply pages) due to security reasons too. Quote from a Multiply staff member: We disabled script access across the board for all embedded flash applications because it poses a significant security risk. Embedded flash players, with allowscriptaccess set to true could potentially execute arbitrary javascript on the page and send other users' personal information to a third party. A picture is worth a thousand words. That's why a good blogging site will do it's best to make adding pictures a snap. On some blogging sites, though there's a way to easily add a photo, there's not much ability to place it where you want it. Or you may find that there's a limit to the number of pictures you're allowed to upload. So to get around that you may have gotten used to hotlinking in photos from other sites. Well hotlink no more. On Multiply, adding an image is a breeze and putting it where you want is even easier. When you're composing a blog post, you'll notice that just under the title is a series of icons. (There's a great article on composing a blog entry right here, if you're interested. It explains a bit about what some of the other icons do as well as gives a bit of info. about adding pictures.) Find the little symbol that looks like a small snapshot of mountain scenery: Click on it. You'll be taken to a new page. (Don't worry, your blog post is just fine, even if you can't see it at the moment.) Here, you'll be given three options: 1) upload a picture from your computer, 2) use a picture that you've already uploaded to an album on multiply, or 3) use a picture that's already online somewhere. Select whichever one is appropriate. Once you've chosen the photo, you'll be given the option of having it show up on the right side of the post, the left side of the post, or in the center. These are the only options for horizontal placement, but vertically you'll be able to put your photo wherever you want. Select the horizontal placement that you prefer and you'll be taken right back to the page you had been composing your blog, only now your picture will be showing up at the top of the page. If you don't want it to be at the top, drag it to wherever you do want it to be. (It'll stay at the horizontal designation that you already chose: right, left or center, even if you drag it to somewhere different than that.) The first picture that you uploaded will also be shown in thumbnail form on your home page if your blog is set up in summary view. But you can move that picture anywhere you'd like in the actual blog. When you add your second picture, it'll pop up at the very top of your blog. Don't sweat. All you have to do is grab it and move it to where you want it to be. If it displaced a previous image for awhile, that one will snap back in place once you've arranged the second one in it's own location. Notice that you can upload photos of different sizes and you're certainly not limited to only one image per blog post. Also, for larger images (like the photo of the Ren. Cen. in Detroit shown to the left) you can click on the photo to see it in a larger format. And if you really want to fit a photo into your blog entry in a place that you can't using the easy add photo feature, you can always fall back upon good old html. If you look back up at the little green portrait icon near the top of this post, you'll notice that it's neither to the right, the left, or the dead center. I added that image by clicking on the check box next to the words "Edit HTML" to the upper right of the composing area and added that image exactly where I wanted it using html. Multiply makes adding photos to your blogs easy and easily customizable. Enjoy!
Html can be scary. Not only because you may not know how to use it, but because occasionally, when entered wrong, you can lose your Edit Options on your Homepage. You thought you typed it in correctly, from instructions you learned at another group or site, yet either you mistyped or mispasted, or part of the code was missing where you got it from. For getting to those edit options another way, see the following thread. http://usersupport.multiply.com/journal/item/15Now you are afraid to try again. So what's an easy way to find out what you did wrong with some of the simpler html codes? A Blog entry! You may not have realized that you had an html "viewer" built into this. Notice the screenshot above, and the "View Source" on the icon bar on an empty blog entry. Try recreating what you were trying to do, using Multiply's icons above. (Bolding, Italizing, coloring letters, and even centering.) Then just click on view source, and you may see what was missing in the code you were trying to use! You can even save as a draft to practice with, ticking and unticking the "view source" box. Then just delete it when done. :)For information, tutorials and help with modifying your Multiply, be sure to use Modify Multiply in the right rail. You may have noticed them, but you still haven't checked out the additional features when composing a blog entry. Those would be the symbols above the content box where you are type your post. Don't worry! You can't break anything so go ahead and give each and all of them a test run! Save it as a draft to see what it looks like, go back, edit and re-edit til you get comfortable with all of these great options.
The last feature in the consecutive row of symbols is a paper clip. That is the latest feature and is used to "attach" a file to your Post! What a great idea!
However, for some reason you may have tried to do an attachment, and it just seems to sit and spin. Or when the spinning stops, there is no attachment showing. That's usually not a Multiply issue or bug, but has to do with the file you are trying to attach.
The file size limit is 20 mgs per attachment. So be sure and check your file size first. Just right click on your file, then go to properties and the file size is there. Of course, the larger the file, the longer this spinning will take place, because you are actually uploading. But did you know that you can also attach up to five files, 20 mgs or less per blog! So actually your limit is 100 mgs per blog! Just attach them one at a time, and again, check your file sizes first.
If however, the file you are trying to attach is too large, then it will stop spinning and there will be no attachment. That is the number one reason a file won't attach. File size. Always check that first!
Many different kinds of files can be attached by using this paperclip "attachment" feature. I personally like to use it for is PDF files and Slideshows! I've attached a slideshow that includes music also as an example. Just right click on the attachment below, "save as" or "save target as" (depending on the browser you are using) and save it to your computer or desktop. Then view at your leisure! PDF & Slideshow files are usually a lot of information in a small file so it works great for this!
Other kinds of files also can be attached, so just watch your file sizes and ENJOY !!
NOTE: As with downloading anything from any site, always scan everything with an antivirus and antispyware program BEFORE you open it.
