Blog EntryAuto Uploader Reminder!Jul 18, '08 10:33 AM
by Linda for everyone
1.  Set your folders during the install process that you want the Auto Uploader to upload from.   To do this, remove the default folders showing in the Auto Uploader (you will see these as you go through the install process) if you don't want all of your pictures and videos uploaded to the Media Locker.  (It will start uploading as soon as the install process is completed).  Replace with the ones you do want, or you can go back and add them later after the install is complete.

2.  If you change your password at Multiply and/or for some reason your Auto Uploader does not upload your files, RESET your log in information in the Auto Uploader.

Blog EntryEmbedding Video Issues Addressed (Update)May 31, '08 7:37 PM
by Linda for everyone
Object tags are currently working and allowed in embedded video code here.

If you have an issue though using a code that includes the object tag, try stripping out all of the code except the < embed portion.  Remove the object and other code.   Just copy/paste from < embed on, and leave out the object closing tag too.

Another high risk security issue addressed a long time ago was embed codes that state "script access=always".  Multiply changes it to "never", and most codes from a reputable site will still work fine.  There are some however, that aren't allowing the change to render the video.  If you currently have one with previous disallowed code that is working, it may continue to unless you edit.  This could render previously working code inoperable.

Most embedded videos WILL play from most sources if you strip the object tags anyway, and with the the "always" changed to "never" (which you don't have to do, your site does it for you), but there will be some videos that that will not work due to the site's share code being unsafe or incompatible. There's nothing that multiply can do to control what code, code with security issues or rogue code other sites include.

Many sites only use a safe share < embed code.  But many add things in their code that you won't even know what it's for or what it does.  Some may have tracking, adverts, and trackback codes.  Some may have much more.

If you want to easily embed a video, just download and upload the video here,  or import to your video section and use Multiply's SAFE share code where html is allowed.  (Blogs, welcome area, etc)

Blog EntryProblems Uploading? UPDATE Your Multiply ToolbarMay 28, '08 2:58 PM
by Linda for everyone
Even though you may have the Multiply Toolbar installed, you may not realize that this is updated from time to time.  You may or may not see the message on the Post Page that your toolbar is not installed (even though it is).

Install/Reinstall the Multiply Toolbar and then use the POST link for posting/uploading your content to Multiply.  It is specifically designed to work in conjunction with the uploaders here and this may solve your upload problems.

You can find the Toolbar on your inbox in the right rail or you may click HERE to install/reinstall the Multiply toolbar.  You do not need to uninstall first.

A tool to assist users with CSS if it won't clear validation and you can't locate your errors. Multiply's validator does show you what and where they are, but this will help you tremendously.

Blog EntryVideo Code Warning Apr 29, '08 6:39 PM
by Linda for everyone
There are currently issues with third party embed (share) video codes from "mynbc.com".  It has been found that when you click on the video to PLAY it anywhere it is embedded here at Multiply or any other site, the CODE copies itself to your computer's clipboard (which is actually what your right click, copy is).

Except that's not what you did.  All you have to do is hit PLAY and it does it without you knowing it.  How crappy is that?

Now for the really crappy part.  It seems to "hang" and get stuck there on your computer's clipboard.  So the next time you try to copy and paste anything else.... that video code is posted instead.  This causes the video code (thus the video) to spread just like a virus.  It has even showed up when someone TYPED something and hit submit without them attempting to paste.

Upon contacting both NBC.com and their webmaster (THREE TIMES).. regarding this issue, they refuse to reply.  I emailed them directly instead of using the contact link HERE.  I also TODAY used the contact link.  I was HOPING they would address this rogue code action without having to post a warning.  I'm actually shocked that an organization would actually ignore a reported issue like this and not reply at all.  But since they ARE ignoring this issue, then there's no alternative but to warn everyone and ask that they link to or post this warning also.

This can happen to you by clicking on the video to play it.  And you may not realize it's an embedded video from that site.  Here are some tips to prevent this nuisance rogue code from being plastered on your site, or from you getting stuck with it on your clipboard and YOU being the cause of it spreading on others' sites.

First:  Hover your mouse over any video that's embedded and look in your BROWSER'S taskbar before you play it.  Where does it link back to?  Is there any branding on the video?  If there is anything that leads you to believe it's from mynbc.com, don't play it.

Second:  Delete any video from there immediately if you find it on your site.  You can disable html in your guestbook and this will stop it from being posted there.  (If you wish to disable html in ALL replies on your site, please visit multiplydesign for the CSS)  But it seems to show up more in guestbooks than anywhere else.

Third:  Use a clipboard cleaner.  Ccleaner from ccleaner.com will clean your clipboard without having to reboot.  (Since this is a windoze temp file and not a browser temp file, cleaning your browsers cache won't clean your clipboard)

Fourth:  Rebooting clears your clipboard also but it's not something you want to have to do often, as it's too hard on your computer.   But in a pinch, you can do this also.

Fifth:  AVOID third party embed codes for anything!  (This includes images)  Host your content here and THEN share it.

Lastly, feel FREE to complain to nbc.com HERE.

At this time, this issue is showing up intermittently, but enough now that it's been noticed.  So again, caution when clicking on or using any third party embed code!

Scriptblocker for firefox will also help prevent third party codes.

The following is the contact I made TODAY.  (My emails were much nicer)  Feel free to take a moment and contact them HERE if you have had this same issue.  (I suspect a phonecall may be the next course of action)

"I have emailed you THREE times now and no one has replied. These were actual emails from the included email address.  Your video share codes are rogue nuisance codes that installs the video share code once someone clicks on PLAY, on to a person's computer clipboard.  As a result, the video spreads like a virus by taking the place of any previous and further attempts to copy/paste anything else.   It will even paste itself when someone replies just by typing text.

Since no one will reply to my emails, I have had to post a warning at http://multiply.com at the User Support Group as well as all of the Multiply Help groups.  (This is a social networking site with approx 9 million users to date) Is there any chance first, that someone will reply NOW to this contact?  Is there any chance that you can correct this issue with your share codes?"

If I receive a reply or update about this, I will post it also.  Please pass this information along and link to this post also.

EDIT:  I'VE ATTACHED A STAND ALONE (FREE) CLIPBOARD CLEANER FOR JUST THESE SPECIAL OCCASIONS.
