Blog EntryCLEAN Temp/Cache Files FIRST!Apr 27, '08 4:23 AM
by Linda for everyone
PLEASE CLEAR TEMP/CACHE FILES FIRST BEFORE POSTING YOUR QUESTION.

NOTE:  RECENT UPGRADE REQUIRES YOU DO THIS FIRST IF YOU HAVE ANY FEATURE OR THEME RELATED PROBLEMS.

Sometimes referred to as "temporary internet files & cookies" in Internet Explorer, or cache files in Firefox...... (and other browsers may have them named something else)

.... They are all temporary files that your computer and/or web browser uses and accumulates over your browsing and computing history. This accumulation can cause a multitude of errors, both on your computer and online.

They serve a purpose to speed up your computer and browsing experience, by making web pages you frequent come up faster (at first).. but as these files fill up, they then will slow you down and can even cause browser crashes.

They can cause a multitude of browsing errors, but I will refer specifically to Multiply. They can cause web pages not to update properly (message board for instance) because your browser grabs an old page instead of bringing up an updated page. They can cause uploading or viewing of images, audio or video files to stall or not show, or just not happen. They can prevent you from downloading. They can even cause the "customize site" button not to show you the yellow drop down customization options. Just about every problem you may have on Multiply can many times be fixed by simply clearing these temporary files out!

Your computer or browser has default settings for the size of these files, that are adjustable upwards. However the larger you adjust these settings, the slower and more bogged down your computer will become before the inevitable much needed clean out.

There are several ways to do this cleaning, depending on your browser. I'll address IE and Firefox (since they are the ones I use)

In IE, while NOT at Multiply, go to Tools, Internet Options, and in the temporary internet section of that window, delete cookies and files. That's it. (If you go into settings in that same window you can adjust your temp files size)

In Firefox, while NOT at Multiply, go to tools, options, advanced tab.. and clear cache. (I raised my default 50 in Firefox to 100 mb and Firefox works better for me using that setting)

Your computer also caches temporary windows files (for pc users) Rebooting clears many of those out so for severe errors I usually suggest rebooting (though I rarely have to do it more than once a day AS LONG as I clean my temp files regularly)

Reboot means to shut down your computer normally, from the start button, using the restart option. When you close your computer down, it dumps windows temporary cache files that it stores and can't be cleaned while your computer is on. This speeds up your computer considerably also, which can also speed up browsing.

One other option that I PREFER, which clears ALL of my IE temporary internet files, cookies, Firefox cache files as well as my computer cache files... and all with one click.. is a temporary file manager.

I personally use ccleaner which is free from ccleaner.com and the only one I recommend to novice computer users because of ease of use. (Uncheck the install toolbar sponsor when installing) I'm sure there are other free temp file cleaners you can google for also, though ccleaner does come with extra tools you can use.

So regardless of the problem you may be having on Multiply, always clear these temp files first by one of the methods listed above. If you find you still have a problem and post about it, let us know that you have already done this. Most Multiply problems are not Multiply problems but are actually computer problems. We have found that for many problems posted here, this is the first thing we have to recommend, and then wait for your to do this, reboot, come back, check your problem, and then come back and tell us if all is well. And most of the time, this works!!

Blog EntryDownloading VideosMar 31, '08 7:16 PM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone
It's another recurring question, so a few tips:

- To enable the download link for the videos you upload you have to activate Advanced Posting in your settings page:

- The post author (owner) should always see the download link, the same way it works with audio files in the Music section.

- If the file is in the FLV (Flash Video) or imported from YouTube.com or any other 3rd party service that uses the FLV file format there will be no download link regardless of the options/settings;

- Adult stuff is restricted to the (few) remaining adult groups (no one can create a new adult group anymore) and videos don't have a download link either;

- You can also use the EMBED code found in the share (look for the link just below the post, to the right) page to add the video anywhere you want without allowing users to download the original video, the same way you can embed videos from other sites.

Blog EntryAllowing Comments from non-Multiply membersMar 22, '08 8:01 PM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone
This is a common recurrent question that often appears in the Questions section, so here is a quick FAQ about it. This reflects my personal opinion and knowledge.

Multiply does not allow  comments from non-Multiply members as probably you know by now. It's this way to prevent abuse (spamming, trolling, etc) and because Multiply is also a social network service, not only a blog tool. But you can also share your posts with non-Multiply members easily, from simpler to more complicated:

- Share your posts by email: Multiply will keep a list of contacts you've invited and you can send your posts to them by email after you publish a new item. Although they won't be able to reply on your page, they will have full access to your content (using the personal link on the email), even for private posts (think secure) and they will be able to reply to you by email. (By the way, you can do this with old posts using the share link on your already-published posts).

- Cross-posting: you can enable cross-posting with 3 services as of now: LiveJournal, Typepad and Blogger. It means that your posts to Multiply will also be (automatically) posted to these services (and vice-versa). These services may offer "anonymous comments", and then you may have the best of two worlds: private comments on Multiply and public comments on Blogger, for instance. For more info:

- Add a chatbox/shout-out box: there are 3rd party services you can use, like the meebo.com widget. The bad thing about this is that you will have to add it to every post, but the good thing is that it will work with any post, not only blog ones. Before you ask, you can only use Flash or simple HTML widgets. JavaScript/iframe are forbidden due to security reasons, so it means that the popular cbox.ws won't work.

Blog EntryGuestbook Defacement - Easy FixMar 11, '08 12:23 PM
by Linda for everyone
There have been reports of malicious code being put in some guestbooks and group threads.  Neither Multiply nor your site has been "hacked".  It's only a code that makes your browser misbehave. (Some people have nothing better to do).

It is EASY to remove the offending comment.

FIRST, report the USER that has done this.  Then, using FIREFOX, go to View/Page Style.  (See screenshot) and turn OFF page styles.  Then go to your guestbook, view all, or the thread with the offending code and delete it.  That's it.  It's that easy.

If you wish to disable html in guestbooks, then you can and that will prevent it from happening again.  But it's not necessary when it's easily removed.

You can also use Scriptblocker with Firefox and it will block the offending code so you can remove it too.

Please feel free to link to this thread.

Blog EntryRetrieving Messages to Customer ServiceMar 2, '08 4:46 PM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone
If you want to retrieve the messages you sent to Customer Services (either requesting help, reporting bugs or reporting abuse) for some reason, use this URL:
http://multiply.com/mail?mail:show_type=inquiries

You may want to bookmark it in your browser since there is no way to save it as a custom filter for your Inbox (for more info about custom filters and other tips about your Inbox, take a look at this post).

While at the subject, some useful guidelines when contacting Multiply's Customer Service:
  • send only one message per issue. Sending more messages will only make the response slower. They usually reply in a couple of days;
  • give them as much info as you can about the issue to make their work easier, this way they will get back to you sooner, and probably already with the answer you need;
  • never disclose other users' info or your own in public, if you need/want to do it, send it directly to Customer Service, never in a public post on your page or in a group.

Blog EntryLatino Tags Installing Adverts On PagesFeb 24, '08 11:44 AM
by Linda for everyone
Latino Tags is one place that you do not want to use image codes from, not only on your site, but especially on your or someone else's GUESTBOOK.

The image included is just ONE that you may see in a guesbook but it will have latino tags included on the image.  (This one does not have the advert)  This image alone would not be a problem.  If it's clickable back to Latino Sites, you have the code from their site.

There are MANY images and codes for them at that site.

http://www.latinotags.com/

You do not want to use them.

The code installs a banner across the top of the guestbook and when you click on "view all" there's and advert installed on your page, upper left corner. I don't know yet what it will do if posted as a reply in a thread.  So don't try it.

Please pass this along by linking to this page  so that this doesn't spread any further.  We've had to help people remove this as it comes to our attention.

This has been reported to Multiply.  They were successful with having other sites repair their codes so this wouldn't happen here.  Perhaps this can be cleared up also.  But until we hear otherwise, best not to use them.

If you DO find this on your site, CLICK HERE for removal instructions.

Blog EntryGroup Search From Any PageFeb 24, '08 8:23 AM
by Linda for everyone
You can now access the Group Search at User Support from any page, without having to go to the homepage welcome area!  (You can still use that one too) Just look at the top of any page next to the title of the Group!  So please search first before posting your question.

If you look down the blogs list of titles on the homepage and also the notes list, you may also find the information you are looking for.

Be sure when you are reading any thread to read all of the replies.  Everything is done to ensure that the correct information is in the replies.  If your question is on the topic of a thread already here, you may add your question to that thread.

If you can't find what you are looking for, please post your question in Notes and title your post with the subject of your question.

Thanks!

Blog EntryWhere are the draft posts?Feb 20, '08 6:02 PM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone
The answer will depend on what kind of post it is.

If it's a blog post, in the Blog page:
http://Your_Username.multiply.com/journal

If it's a photo album, in the Photos page:
http://Your_Username.multiply.com/photos

If it's a video, in the Video page:
http://Your_Username.multiply.com/video

If it's a music playlist, in the Music page:
http://Your_Username.multiply.com/music

If it's a link, in the Links page:
http://Your_Username.multiply.com/links

If it's an event, in the Calendar page:
http://Your_Username.multiply.com/calendar

If it's a review, in the Reviews page:
http://Your_Username.multiply.com/reviews

Replace Your_Username with your actual Multiply username (userID) or simply use the navigation bar on your page.

The same goes for drafts in groups: look for the section of the kind of post you saved as draft and you will find it. When you do, you can either delete the post or edit and then publish.

PS: draft posts are always private, what means that no one but the author will be able to see it until it's published.

When you post a question, we require that you include a direct link to what it is you are referring to regarding the problem you may be having on your personal site (or group where applicable).

If we can't see what you are referring to, we can't assist you.  And we can't spend the time it takes to go looking for what you are talking about, in hopes of finding it.   Also, make sure when possible, that permissions are set to "everyone" for us to access the links.

PLEASE include the link to what you are referring to.  (Not just the link to your homepage if the issue is somewhere else).  We can already access your homepage by clicking on your name or headshot.  It's the link to the PROBLEM you are having that we need.

ALSO - Please include the browser name and browser version you are using.  To get the version, go to Help, About in your browser toobar.

NOTE:  NO links to anything on your inbox or a PM will work.  Please don't include those.

Blog EntryFix problems viewing Photos/ImagesFeb 10, '08 12:24 PM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone

  • If you cannot see any image at all (you just see empty spaces) in albums:

  • - Reset your browser (empty the cache and delete all cookies):
    http://usersupport.multiply.com/journal/item/56/CLEAN_TempCache_Files_FIRST

    - If it happens only in your page and you are using a customized theme, try using a standard theme:
    http://usersupport.multiply.com/journal/item/140/Using_a_Custom_Theme_Cannot_see_your_contentlinks_Read_this

    - If it happens everywhere or it's intermittent, probably you have something installed in your computer or browser that's blocking images, like a firewall, privacy filter or anti-virus. Disable them temporally to find which one is causing problem and then configure it to allow images from multiply.com.

  • If you cannot find the album (post) either in your main page or in our Photos page but you can still open it from your Inbox or navigating to it using  the prev/next links in your other albums, edit the missing post and edit something minor like its title, then save the post and it should be available again.

  • If the images are distorted, rotated or all of them display the same caption after you've uploaded them, probably it's due to some extra info attached to the file by the digital camera or the software you've used to edit them. Open the files again in your computer and save them in JPEG or PNG format stripping all the extra info (EXIF data, thumbnail, etc) and try to upload again.

  • If you have the wrong image when you try preview the image after clicking on the thumbnail in your Photo album or you get a message saying that your post was deleted, you have to contact Customer Service (link on the right rail >>>>) and give them all the info you can about the problem, and also add a lin to the album with problems to the message so they can locate it easily.

Blog EntryFixing a missing Submit buttonFeb 10, '08 12:08 PM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone

The most common cause of a missing Submit button is that you've collapsed the reply box too much, hiding also the buttons. To fix it, simply click on the five small dots in the lower-right corner of the reply box and drag it down, to expand the reply box:

Just to make things clear: the reply settings are generic (the same settings will apply to any place on Multiply) and user-specific. So if you change it in one post, all places will then reflect that change. It affects the size of the reply box and the reply sorting order (chronological, reverse or threaded). So if you have a problem with a missing Submit button in your Guestbook, enlarging the reply box using the dots will fix it everywhere (after you refresh the page, of course).

If it does not fix it for you, either you have a problem in your browser or the custom theme you're using for your page has a problem. Then you may want to read these:

Blog EntryREMOVE ADS From Third Party CodesDec 13, '07 11:22 AM
by Linda for everyone
We offer no support here for using "BAD" third party codes, (except to tell you to remove them) but this is an EXCELLENT tutorial for those who are using them.

Since SO many of these codes DO cause feature issues on this and other sites, if you MUST use them, please consider removing the offending parts of the code.

Thanks to Psychotic for posting this at several of the other Help Groups!

Hopefully, this will reduce or eliminate the number of issues that are posted at this group as a result of these codes.

Blog EntryHow to Fix a Problem in your Main PageNov 20, '07 11:21 AM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone
After the last update (Multiply 3.0) you do most of the page editing and change the settings directly in your main page. You just have to click on the Customize My Site link at the top of your page (right bellow the navigation menu, to the right) or go to Settings -> My Site. There is no other way to change some settings. The only exceptions are the Page Layout and the Welcome Message box, that can be edited using this link: http://multiply.com/setup/pages/content

But sometimes you enter the wrong HTML code and you can't change the settings anymore (or you might have some broken code before the update and now you can't edit your main page at all). So follow these simple tips:

- Download and install the latest Firefox if you haven't done yet. It's a free web browser, more secure and stable than IE (Internet Explorer) and it's more compatible with Multiply too;

- Lately it seems that most problems are due to graphics added by to the Guestbook. If you think it's the problem, please follow the tips in this tutorial to hide the graphics or delete the offending entry:
http://usersupport.multiply.com/journal/item/131/Guestbook_FAQ

- Backup your Custom CSS (when you choose another theme you may lose the code);

- Chose another theme and try to edit the section that has the broken code. You may have to change themes a couple of times if it does not work at the first time.

- If it still does not work, go to the pages below and remove any HTML code, leaving just plain text:
http://multiply.com/setup/pages/content  (Welcome Message and boxes titles)
http://Your_Username.multiply.com/edit/title (Page Title - replace Your_Username with your actual Multiply username)

- After modifying and checking for broken codes, select your preferred theme again and copy your Custom CSS back.

If you still can't edit your main page, you should contact the support staff and give them as much details as your can about what you want to do but can't.

PS1: I saw the above tip the first time on Nov 16th in a group, posted by licatayag.

PS2: There are more shortcuts that may help you fixing problems or getting to 'hidden' pages on Multiply in this other post:
http://usersupport.multiply.com/journal/item/202/Useful_Shortcuts

PS3: If you've hidden something in your Home Page and you don't see the unhide links after you click on Customize My Site, maybe you've set your page to Linear View. Try going back to Boxes View to unhide what you want first:
http://multiply.com/setup/pages/home

Update1:
After the latest Multiply update, the Customize My Site link has moved to the rail, below the headshot.

Blog EntryCan't Upload?Nov 17, '07 9:03 PM
by Linda for everyone
For some reason you just can't seem to upload photos or images. You've tried each option, and still it does not want to work. This can happen along with another problem too - You cannot see see images in your album. Or you can see thumbnails, but can't open the images.

Can't seem to upload Audio or Video files either?

This is usually a problem not related to Multiply, but still easily fixed. The following steps should be taken to insure that the problem is not with your computer first.

1. TEMP FILES - Temporary internet files, cookies, and cache files need to be cleaned out periodically. Depending on the browser you use (IE, Firefox or other), at the top of your browser click on "tools", and then "options" or "internet options" or something similar according to your browser. That is where you will find temporary internet files, cookies and some cache files. Clear and delete them. Close your browser. And to further clean additional computer cache files, reboot. Temporary files not only bog down your computer, but your browsing ability as well, and that can include uploading and downloading, and proper updated viewing of pages and especially images.

NOTE: This can affect all aspects of your Multiply experience including your ability to browse Multiply quickly, and other uploading and downloading features as well. Several free and simple software tools are available to clean these out either automatically, or with a "one click" on demand option also.

2. PRIVACY TOOLS - Some security software that includes Privacy features, can affect your ability to see or work with images online. One example is McAfee's privacy feature has been known to do this, and you may need to disable that feature or where possible, adjust the settings. Even if you have never changed your settings, auto updates can change certain things without your knowlege.

3. FIREWALL SETTINGS - Same thing can happen with auto updates. Something changes, even if you did not change it. There are too many Firewalls to go into each and every one of their settings, so don't just accept defaults. Explore your security software settings!

Blog EntryJavaScript and iframe: how to dealNov 17, '07 5:58 PM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone

JavaScript (the have the script tag in the code) and iframe codes aren't allowed in Multiply for security reasons. Any other code that is simple HTML or Flash, like the ones that use the EMBED or OBJECT command, should work fine. Usually the site give you options for the code: look for the one in simple HTML (no script tags) or one that uses Flash.

Tip: many widgets that use JavaScript code also have a non-JavaScript code attached for compatibility reasons, like the counter from sitemeter.com. To use it on Multiply simply copy the code between the noscript tags. For example, if they give you this code:

<!-- Site Meter -->
<script type="text/javascript" src=">http://s24.sitemeter.com/js/counter.js?site=YourUsername">
</script>
<noscript>
<a href="http://s24.sitemeter.com/stats.asp?site=YourUsername" target="_top">
<img src="http://s24.sitemeter.com/meter.asp?site=YourUsername" alt="Site Meter" border="0"/></a>
</noscript>

<!-- Copyright (c)2006 Site Meter -->

Copy this part and use it in your site:

<a href="http://s24.sitemeter.com/stats.asp?site=YourUsername" target="_top">
<img src="http://s24.sitemeter.com/meter.asp?site=YourUsername" alt="Site Meter" border="0"/></a>

PS: JavaScript isn't the same as Java. Java widgets should work too, as they usually use the EMBED/OBJECT tag.

As a side note, sometimes when you try to copy and paste excerpts from other web pages to yours, usually blog entries, you may get the message that 'JavaScrit/CSS isn't allowed', and you can save your post. It happens because some of the page code was also copied and also pasted with the text. To avoid this, first paste the excerpt in a plain-text editor, like Notepad on Win or Smultron on a Mac, and then copy it again and paste on your page. You will get only the text and should be able to save your entry.

Update1:
EMBED codes that have allowscriptaccess won't work anymore (they will be disabled when added to Multiply pages) due to security reasons too. Quote from a Multiply staff member:
We disabled script access across the board for all embedded flash applications because it poses a significant security risk. Embedded flash players, with allowscriptaccess set to true could potentially execute arbitrary javascript on the page and send other users' personal information to a third party.

Blog EntryHow to Delete Many Posts FasterNov 15, '07 11:00 PM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone

PS: This tip is a work-around, and it does not work for photo albums or videos, only for Blogs, Music, Reviews and Links AFAIK.

OK, you have imported your blog entries from some other site and then found out that some were duplicated, or you want to delete all your old reviews to start over but there is no way to do a 'mass delete', right? Don't desperate. There is a little trick to make thing faster.

First, go to your Page Layouts (you can also access if after you click on Customize My Site found in your main page) and configure the section with the entries you want to delete to Full Entries. Then go to that section in your page. For example, if you want to delete your blog entries, click on Blog in your navigation menu ir go to:
http://Your_Username.multiply.com/journal

Now you should see all your entries with full contents, and also on the left a link to delete each one. Click on the first delete link and a window should appear asking you to confirm if your really want to delete the entry. Click on OK. Here is the catch: you don't even have to wait for the page to refresh to delete the next entry, just wait a couple of seconds and click on the next delete link, confirm again, wait 2 seconds, and so on... Of course, when you finish with the first page, probably you will want to refresh the page to see if you didn't miss any post and then continue with the deletion task...

You can do the same when you want to delete many replies to your posts. Actually, I found this tip when I had to delete 200+ comments in my own guestbook.

Hope it helps. Good luck.

Blog EntryHow to Block an UserNov 12, '07 7:04 PM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone

There are three ways of doing it:

1) Go to the user’s home page. You’ll see a link in the right rail under his/her headshot that says: “Block [user]”. That’s easy, but you will show up in the viewing history for his/her page, and maybe you prefer not to, so

2) Move your mouse-cursor across the user’s headshot (don’t click) wherever you see it, e.g. in your viewing history. Now a mini-profile should pop up in which there are some links; one of them is “Block [user]”. Click there.

3) If you know her/his username, put this in yout browser location bar (where you type the http://...) and then press the ENTER key (replace USER_NAME with the actual username you want to block):
http://USER_NAME.multiply.com/block

If the mini-profile doesn’t pop up, it’s probably because you have disabled the feature. Go to “Preferences” above your message board and scroll down until you find a little box named “Hide mini-profile mouseover pop-ups”. Untick the box, click “OK”. Now find the pesterer’s headshot somewhere and do as in 2).

Note that you can’t block a contact; you have to remove him/her from your list of contacts first. You do that exactly the same way as described in 2). You may go to your My Network page and to do remove the person from your contact list, or access this page:
http://multiply.com/network/remove-contact

or even this if your know her/his USER_NAME:
http://multiply.com/network/remove/USER_NAME

Credits for the text above: ullangoo

Update1:
Since the last update, now you have to click on a headshot to display the mini-profile.

Some people want their entire site on Multiply to be private in every way.  Others want everything to be public.  But the majority of Multiply users are somewhere in the middle, wanting to share some things with the world, but reserving some other bits of info. just for their closest friends and family.

Multiply's privacy settings are very customizable.  It's possible to show some pieces of information about yourself, without giving it all away.  The following is a quick summary that will help you set up your Multiply experience to be exactly the way you want it.

------------------------

if you want to make a post private
, then make sure you select something other than "everyone" in the privacy settings at the end of the post.   (if you already published the post but realized later that you forgot that step, you can go back and edit the post and change it.)  posting something for "everyone" will make it so that search engines can find it.  (some people want this.  it's a handy feature for people who want to have a public blog in addition to the private blogging that they do for friends and family only.)

if you don't want search engines to find your content, select anything other than "everyone" when making the post.  this would mean selecting "network," "contacts" or individuals.

if you want to just send something out to all your friends, say, or just your family, you can choose "contacts" and then modify that even further to include only your contacts that are friends (or family, or coworkers).

don't forget that any replies you make on a friend or family members threads will automatically fall under whatever privacy setting they have made for their post.  so if they have set their post to everyone, then not only is their post available for the world to see and for search engines to pick up, but your replies are also.

if you want to make your profile private
, you need to go to your profile, click on the "edit profile" link to the upper right of the profile and change your privacy settings for each section.

if you want to make your last name, email address and birthday private, you need to click on the settings link in the upper right hand corner, and then select "my account" and change that there.

if you want to make your guestbook private
, you need to click on "customize my site" on your home page.  then go to the box that's around your guestbook and click "edit."  change your privacy settings there. to read the guestbook faq, click here.

if you don't want anyone to know where you live
, not even your contacts, you can change the zip code setting to 00000.

if you want to make your groups and contact info. private, click on "customize my site." then go to the box that has either your contacts or groups in it. (this works pretty similarly for both.) click on "edit." the privacy settings are the first things that you can change.

note: hiding your contact box or your groups box does not make the information private.  someone could find it via URL.  so make sure you change your privacy settings before hiding the box (if you choose to hide the box).  also, even though you've hidden the boxes, you'll still see the links to those sections under your headshot.  others won't be able to see it, but you will.

also, the A#1 most important rule to remember when concerned about privacy is to never ever ever accept someone as a contact that you don't trust.  if you do that, you pretty much make all the rest of the privacy controls on multiply rather worthless.  (it's like having a well guarded castle but letting in any visitor that arrives at the gate.   ;-)    )  for more information on adding contacts, please check out this post.
